Safed Ghaow School – Success of 2013!
Safed Ghaow village is located in the district of Waras in the south-west of the Province of Bayman. Villages there seem to hang along abrupt mountain slopes. The region is therefore very unfertile and wheat (lalmi) is the only local crop and source of income.
It takes incredible resolve to provide education and study in these difficult mountainous conditions. Remarkable is the commitment of the authorities and parents to see their young children participate in classes, despite the difficult climate. The ground is often humid and cold.
The Nai Qala Association has built a school for over 400 students (of which, half are girls), coming from 17 surrounding villages. Some children walk for up to three hours to reach the site where classes are currently given by eleven teachers (four women, seven men). Classes include 1st to 6th grade.
The school was formally registered with the Ministry of Education in 2008 but funds were not available for the actual construction of the building.
